History of the Michigan Flag
 

The third state flag is the current one, which was approved in 1911. The first flag had the state coat of arms on one side and a picture of Michigan's first governor, Stevens T. Mason, on the other. Nobody is aware of any photos of the original flag, which has been utterly gone. The United States coat of arms was featured on one side of the second flag, which was adopted in 1865.
 

The current Michigan flag was ranked 59th out of 72 flags by the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA) in its 2001 study of American state, American territorial, and Canadian province flags. Just 3.46 points out of a possible 10 were averaged by the poll respondents.
 

A bill that would have established a flag commission to oversee a public design competition to replace the present state flag was introduced in the Michigan state senate by Michigan State Senator Steven Bieda in November 2016, but it was ultimately unsuccessful. However, if the law had been approved, a new state flag would have been introduced in January 2019 to replace the existing one.
 

Flag Design
 

The state's coat of arms has a blue shield with the rising sun over a lake and peninsula, a man holding up his hand in the name of peace, and a long gun in the name of the state's struggle for independence as a frontier state.
 

Elk and moose, which serve as supporters and are iconic to Michigan, are taken from the coat of arms of the Hudson's Bay Company. The American nation that created the state of Michigan from the Northwest Territory is symbolized by the bald eagle.
 

Three Latin maxims are displayed in the design. From top-to-bottom they are:  

-The motto of the United States, "E Pluribus Unum," or "Out of many, one," is written on a crimson ribbon. 

-"Tuebor" on the light blue shield signifies "I will protect."  

-Si Quris Peninsulam Amoenam Circumspice, which translates to "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look around you," is written on a white ribbon (The official state motto).

-The Michigan state flag's most recent iteration was formally approved in 1911. Legislators approved a bill designating the Michigan state flag on August 1 of that year. It stipulated that the state's coat of arms should be shown on a blue backdrop in the Michigan state flag.
 

-Many people are unaware that the Michigan state flag originally had two sides. The state's coat of arms could be seen on the front, while the first governor of Michigan's portrait could be seen on the back. The original version of this design wasn't changed until 1865. The second design, however, still had a two-sided structure. However, it had the United States coat of arms on the back rather than a picture of the state's first governor. The Michigan state flag's two-sided structure was removed in the third version.
 

-Elk and moose, two of Michigan's most prominent species, are depicted on the state flag. They form the foundation of Michigan's coat of arms. However, the bald eagle is also included on the flag due to its significance to the United States as a whole.
