Kirk Higgins has a background in early American history, and he's using it to get kids excited about how the country works. His job at the Bill of Rights Institute is to create resources for teachers that make learning about America's founding fun. There’s lesson plans, videos, essays, and more. It's all about knowing how to interact with others in the community.
As Kirk says, "The more that we can equip students to understand what it is to engage with their fellow citizens, what it's like to go out to their communities and make a difference...then we can equip them to make a difference and to continue on this great American experiment."

Getting kids excited about history isn't easy. It requires a curriculum that keeps their attention and is fun to learn. Kirk's lessons do just that. Students learn everything from how the government works to its founding—in a nonpartisan way. He encourages students to challenge their viewpoints and put themselves in someone else’s shoes through respectful debate. And the best part? Teachers can use these resources free of charge.

Anyone can download free resources from the Bill of Rights Institute's website -- symbols that bring us together by helping every classroom share in America’s story. There's also an active YouTube channel with tons of videos that are great for kids of all ages.
Kirk talks about why offering free resources is so important. "We don't have any cost to the materials that we have for teachers; all of them are available [digitally] free, online. They're all published as open educational resources, meaning teachers can take 'em, adopt 'em, and use them in whatever way they think is best for their classrooms.”
