Details

The Portland City flag classically symbolizes the vital industry, abundant natural beauty and valued location of the city. The Portland flag features a Kelly green background with an offset cross of light blue. The cross is edged by white and yellow stripes which create a white four pointed star. The green symbolizes Oregon's beautiful evergreen forests which surround the city. The intersecting blue stripes replicate the Columbia and Willamette Rivers and the white star signifies the city of Portland which sits at their union. Portland is Oregon's largest city. During the 1830's large numbers of settlers began arriving in the Portland area via the Oregon Trail. A new settlement began to emerge along the Willamette River, halfway between Oregon City and Fort Vancouver. Portland owes its name to a coin toss between Francis Pettygrovve of Portland, Maine and Asa Lovejoy of Boston. The two men owned the majority of the land that is now Portland and each wanted to name the area for his respective hometown. Petttygrove won two of three tosses and thus the city was named Portland.
