The Kentucky State flag showcases the power and rustic nobility of “The Bluegrass State”. The flag of Commonwealth of Kentucky consists of the state seal elegantly centered in a blue field. Within the Kentucky seal, a statesman and a frontiersman embrace. Popular belief maintains that the statesman and frontiersman are Henry Clay, Kentucky’s most famous statesman, and Daniel Boone, an early pioneer and explorer. The Kentucky state motto: “United We Stand, Divided We Fall” circles them. Sprays of goldenrod and the words “Commonwealth of Kentucky” surround the motto. Kentucky was the 15th state admitted to the Union on June 1, 1792. The Commonwealth of Kentucky became the first U.S. state west of the Appalachian Mountains. The Kentucky flag was designed by Jesse Cox Burges and adopted in 1918.

Full History of the Kentucky State Flag

The first national flags of Kentucky were those of the nations whose citizens had immigrated to the state. Kentucky saw the British Union Jack fly until the American Revolution. Virginia's flag was flown in the state following the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

In 1792, Kentucky ratified the Union and accepted its flag. Over Kentucky during the American Civil War, both the Union and Confederate flags were flown.

The state flag was created by Jesse Cox Burgess in 1918. On March 26, 1918, the plan was formally adopted. The flag's design hasn't been altered, and it's still in use today. State-wide standardization of the flag's design occurred in 1963.

The Commonwealth's seal is displayed on a navy blue background, bordered by the words "Commonwealth of Kentucky" above and sprigs of the state flower, goldenrod, below.

The seal features an embrace between a pioneer and a statesman. According to popular opinion, the man in the suit on the right is Henry Clay, Kentucky's most renowned statesman, and the man in the buckskin on the left is Daniel Boone, who is largely responsible for the exploration of Kentucky. The guys represent all frontiersmen and statesmen rather than a specific individual, according to the official justification.

Kentucky's flag was voted 66th when the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA) polled its members in 2001 about the designs of the 72 Canadian province, American state, and American territorial flags.

Colors of the Kentucky Flag

A national park, a world heritage site, a biosphere reserve, and an international dark sky park were all created for the area on July 1, 1941, October 27, 1981, September 26, 1990, and October 28, 2021, respectively. The 52,830 acres of the park are mostly in Edmonson County, with a few spots stretching into Hart and Barren counties to the east. The Nolin River, a tributary of the Green River, enters the Green River immediately inside the park, which is traversed by the Green River. With more than 420 miles of studied corridors, Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system in the world. Sac Actun underwater cave in Mexico is the second-longest known cave system.
