The Indianapolis flag celebrates those who courageously gave their lives for America's freedom. The Indianapolis City flag consists of a white star within a red circle as four white lines move outward on a navy blue background. The white center represents Monument Circle, the heart of downtown Indianapolis. The four white stripes signify North and South Meridian Streets. The four sections of blue denote the residential areas of the city. The white star on the Indianapolis flag represents the city's Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument and acknowledges Indianapolis as the capital of Indiana. The monument pays homage to troops who fought in other American wars and conflicts; it has become a symbol of Indianapolis and the capital of Indiana. For more information about Indianapolis City flag see the description tab below.
Indianapolis was founded in 1821. The city was planned as the new seat for Indiana's state government. Indianapolis got its named from Indiana Supreme Court Justice Jeremiah Sullivan who combined Indiana with polis, the Greek word for city. Indianapolis is often referred to as “the Crossroads of America" as the city is the junction of six U.S. highways, four state roads and six interstate highways.
