History of the 13 Star Nylon US Flag
This historic US flag's 13 stars represent the original colonies, and was first flown in battle during the Siege of Fort Stanwix. Its white stripes came from soldiers' blouses, the red from the flannel petticoats of officers' wives and the blue union from the coat of Capt. Abraham Swartout. The flag's design originated with Francis Hopkinson of New Jersey, one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence. It remained the official U.S. flag until 1795, when the number of stars was changed from 13 to 15, reflecting the admission of Kentucky and Vermont into the Union.
