Portland City Flags
Portland is Oregon's largest city. During the 1830's large numbers of settlers began arriving in the Portland area via the Oregon Trail. A new settlement began to emerge along the Willamette River, halfway between Oregon City and Fort Vancouver. Portland owes its name to a coin toss between Francis Pettygrovve of Portland, Maine and Asa Lovejoy of Boston. The two men owned the majority of the land that is now Portland and each wanted to name the area for his respective hometown. Petttygrove won two of three tosses and thus the city was named Portland.
