History of the United States Merchant Marine Flag 

Our United States Merchant Marine flags with fringe feature a deep blue background with a bald eagle spreading its wings over a red, white, and blue shield and anchor. The design also includes the words “In Peace and War” and the date 1775, the year the Merchant Marine traces its origins. 

Although the date on the flag is historic, the design itself is much more recent. On May 24, 1994. Maritime Administrator Albert Herberger introduced the flag as a way to honor America’s civilian mariners—men and women who have supported the nation’s armed forces in every major conflict. 

While the Merchant Marine is not part of the U.S. military, its members work closely with the Navy and other branches, especially during wartime.
